Embrace Frustration And Get "Unstuck"

Author: Jeff Diehl

Frustration is such a powerful feeling that we automatically assume it to be negative. It is that feeling that goes along with the experience of being thwarted in reaching your goals. This feeling, although uncomfortable and painful at times, can be a catalyst to change. It is a very positive and necessary part of success.

Frustration is energy and a call-to-action. How you respond to frustration is critical to reaching your goals. Its up to you and it can be either positive or negative. Reacting by blaming others or giving up is like leaving your car running while youre at lunch - a complete waste of energy.

Why should you embrace frustration? Heres a few reasons:

# Frustration can be a major self-motivator. You can use it to change what is not working. It allows you to get unstuck and to make course corrections in your actions that will lead you to your goals. This is also known as persistence and is the cornerstone of real success.

# Frustration mobilizes your senses and energizes you to take action to avoid unpleasantness. It focuses your attention on seeking out alternative behaviors that will produce pleasure and satisfaction.

# Frustration plays an important role in your conscious and subconscious mind. Your attitude and response to frustrating events dictates how successfully you will manage your actions. If your conscious mind can accept frustration as a natural element of learning you will not be paralyzed by it. The role your subconscious mind plays should not be under-estimated. Unlike your conscious mind, your subconscious mind never stops searching for alternatives. Have you ever woke up the next day with a solution? Learn to trust your subconscious mind to find many of the solutions that seem so elusive to the conscious mind.

There are two primary ways to harness the power of frustration and use it to get positive results.* The first way is to release the frustration physically. Frustration is a powerful motivator for exercise. I always pair new learning (often frustrating) with intermittent walks. The second primary way to harness the power of frustration is to release it mentally. This is oftentimes agonizing process of changing actions and behaviors, searching for alternatives, and just plain perseverance. This is precisely how success stories are created.

Frustration does not have to be bad. It may not feel good at the time, but once you understand the real power of frustration and the incredibly positive effects it can have, youll begin to use it to your full advantage to bring yourself closer to success.
