There is no doubt that New Mexico has some of the most difficult terrain for a cyclist. There are two huge mountain ranges and lots of flat areas 100s of square miles throughout the state. Let's start our ride at 4600 feet above sea level in Socorro, NM and ride to Texas for a hardy long-distance cycling ride. Yes we can call this an ultra-long distance ride, as it is some 200 miles. Perhaps not wise for the amateur and yet one with a good strong base of personal character can in fact handle this. Starting from Socorro, NM we will start at the little caf on Spring Street and South California and head North on California to Otero and head East to the 439 and go South, this is all of 2.5 miles and it is just getting us a little warmed up for the 200 plus mile ride ahead. On the 439 we will head down Hope Farms Road to Riverside to Ditch Road to Farm Market Road and hang a left to Hwy 1 and head South, still we are under 5 miles and it is about 5 miles more to the Hwy 380 where we trek East across the state, we should be warmed up by then. Next it is about 60 miles to Carrizozo, NM and we will have climbed about 1400 feet in elevation. Next is Capitan, NM another 350 feet up and about 15 more miles. 25 miles past there we will meet up with Hwy 70 and ride another 45 miles through tough mountainous terrain into Roswell, NM; home to the Aliens. After a short break we will trek out across the desert plains to Texas about 88 miles and only passing one more small town of Tatum just 15 miles before the border. Plains, TX is where we will complete this 200 mile plus mega-ride on our journey across America. |
