What a total shame. What we considered a normal everyday conversation in referring to the baseball playing teams of the Boys Industrial School or the term Reform School is a no no. Did I miss something along lifes way? One of the most competitive and true spirited baseball teams in our American Legion play was the boys at the Boys Industrial School. Do we still have teams from our Human Resources or Human Development School Campuses enjoying competitive sports and in particular baseball? The most prized aspect of the game of baseball is the plain and simple fact it provides an immensely important role in learning. The game and the participation as a team and the struggle to achieve and win both individually and as a team player is without question a blessing. No boy or girl should ever be deprived of the privilege of being in team competition. I am saying the foregoing with the thought and concern for which I feel is a shortfall in our society. In days of yester years the Reform Schools were allowed to participate in sports and compete off campus. If off campus competitive sports is allowed or condoned then for gosh sake why do we not recognize and know about it? I will climb down from my soap box and pledge to find out the status of our now Human Resource Facilities or whatever name we now use. Baseball fans around the world should if they do not already know, learn the story of the greatest name in baseball. Baseball players and fans will always cherish and respect the greatest sports figure to ever play the game who was a product of the Boys Reform School. I doubt seriously "Babe Ruth" ever heard his school days referred to as a Human Resources Campus. My bottom line thought is simply this, Now is the time to recognize and bring this part of our community and society into our mainline everyday world including competitive sports. I would venture to surmise their competitive gusto and pride would propel them into perennial champions. Batter Up---Let's Play Ball... |
